Basic Altars and an Update on Publication

Posted in Occultism, Paganism, The Path of Flames, Traditional Witchcraft with tags , , , , , , , , on September 4, 2014 by Sypheara

With August falling off the edge without a solid entry, due to work and endless sword seminars, I thought it would be a good idea to get  around posting something i’ve been meaning to get around to for awhile.

First off however, I would just like to state that I received a reply from the editor of the anthology I submitted an entry to, and he has confirmed that my article has been selected for publication! As such, hopefully once i’ve seen it in its final form and cleared it, I will be able to link and recommend the finished product, as I will be unable to share the article publicly until one year after publication in print. It is really encouraging to get something possibly published, and might mean an easier job in getting any further works into print in the future.

The topic of this post however will be altars, specifically, mine in regards to Hecate and the other witch gods. I often get asked about my altar set up, and usually the answer has been pretty simple: It is basically an amalgamation of everything that I have come across, have made, or otherwise possesses some occult virtue alongside offerings to the Gods.

It must be said before I go any further that this post, in regards to my own altar, is going to be picture light. I will be illustrating my post where possible with existing pictures of Hecatian altars that belong to others that are publicly available on the internet. I myself do not agree with taking pictures of a space that is for personal use in regards to communing with the Gods. As a sacred space, I feel it should be kept private, and viewed only by ideally oneself, other practitioners, and very close family members at the most.

This is my own personal taboo, but interestingly, both Mark and several other practitioners I talk to have mentioned this to me only recently as either a warning that this shouldn’t be done or that they personally also don’t share pictures of their own altars. I respect and understand why others feel differently however, even if I don’t necessarily agree, and they do serve an educational purpose to those who wish to construct their own.

Altar of Hecate by Zingaia

Without further ado then. Altars can be small or large, simple or complex, or anything inbetween. My own altars for the last few years have served primarily as a stop gap – somewhere I can practice and give offerings, as a practical space, with the hopes of in the future creating a more empowered altar that would serve as the ideal replacement. Due to the fact I had no permanent residence, or would often have little to no privacy for occult work whilst watched over by religious types that disagree with my practices, these have been small, compact, and easy to relatively easily deconstruct. These are the ones that I now will detail.

The altar itself is a small, round circular table upon which is laid a very basic red altar cloth. This is more for practical reasons than anything else, due to the amount of incense I burn and the capacity of things to spill. This is about one metre high from the ground, so a relatively low table.

The most important part of my altar, arguably, are the central fetishes. These are the objects that in the main, help channel Hecate and  the other Witch Gods. The main two are talismanic – that is, in some manner constructed by myself to be suitable for their purpose. There is a statue of a dragon with an inset green geode, that has been consecrated and empowered to act as a central focal point. Alongside this, is my spirit box which I have detailed the construction of elsewhere on this blog. This box acts as an even arguably stronger link that the main statue, and links the altar to the Witch Gods to which it was created as well as the mighty dead, with Hecate being prime and first.

The box itself sets upon a sigil of the three crossed staves, and the the geode of the dragon often contains small pieces of paper with prayers, requests, questions written on them and folded up into the crevice so they can be charged. Once an answer is given, these are burned in the open air with thanks and libation.

Alongside these two talismanic objects are things i have just seemingly ‘acquired’, based on intuitive judgement, If you keep your own altar, and work with the spirits, you’ll understand what I mean by this. Sometimes you are just compelled t acquire a certain object for its use upon the altar, some internal ‘voice’ tells you it is required or desired.

These central fetishes are supported by a ring of 36 brass skeleton keys, all of which have again been consecrated and arranged around the box. These help strengthen the links further to Hecate and her Key Bearing /Master of Locks and Doorway  aspects, and I intend to use them in important workings in the future.

hecatealtar2

Altar of Hecate by an Unknown Practitioner

Alongside these objects, are several others i have just seemingly acquired. Working with an altar dedicated to the spirits seems to attract all sorts of associated objects over time. A non exhaustive list would be the following:

+A salt dried piece of driftwood that acts as a wand, given by the sea in return for my first pentacle, which i lost upon being gifted the branch. It compelled me to take it, and it has acted as my primary tool since acquiring it. It will be further enhanced and worked with in the future, but it gives off an energy which means I feel like I have little to do to it.

+3 stones, 1 quarts, 1 feldspar, and 1 moonstone. These act as further enhancers, and have been placed around the box alongside the keys.

+1 large tree seed of unknown origin. Placed as above.

+1 piece of grave stone, bought from the spirits at and collected from the local graveyard.

+1 glass encased spider corpse, due to my affinity with the creatures on a spiritual level.

+1 dagger, that came into my possession and consecrated, that is used in a multifaceted manner.

+ Several bits of red string left over from the box consecration ritual

On top of these, the practical tools for giving offerings and the offerings itself exist upon the table as follows:

+2  incense burners, one large, one small.

+3 candle holders, sitting atop the three main sigils of the witchgods.

+3 Glass bottles contain a water and pepper mixture corked.

+1 mug containing a suitable libation, usually black coffee or some form of alcohol

+1 glass jar, containing a mix of water, pepper, and numerous essentials oils that are mixed in with it (usually patchouli + others) used to feed tools and the box and as an offering in itself.

+1 ash holder, for containing all the burnt ashes, as they can be used for a multitude of purposes.

Working with this altar is very simple – every week the ingredients are changed on a Monday, and any libations are poured away around the thresholds of the doors in entrance to the house. This fortifies the protective shield around my own home, and feeds the genius loci. Any left over solid offerings that may have been given in addition to the above are taken to the nearby graveyard or a wooded area of seclusion and left there.

I ensure that my altar is kept private, and when necessary, it is quickly dismantled with each object being carefully and respectfully packaged away until the interference subsides and it can be rebuilt.

Things are added to the altar on an intuitive basis, either due to containing there own natural power or added as part of a talismanic construction on my own part.

By adding and growing and interacting with our altars, we work closely with the Gods and Spirits, creating a personal space of connection between us and them. Hopefully this post has illuminated my basic setup. Going forward, I hope to construct a much better, more permanent altar which I will detail the creation of and share if possible in the form of a document.

Awakening Clay: A Test

Posted in Occultism, Paganism with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 21, 2014 by Sypheara

The work on the essay/article continues, with feedback now being provided by the editor. The initial reaction was quite positive, and based on feedback by others, I am confident  that the article after some edits will be accepted. Work remains to be done to ensure it can be framed within the context of the overall anthology, and with not being aware of other submissions or what they bring, this probably means it needs more than a bit of refinement.

In other news, I have been writing up contact with the familiar, as well as other occurrences that have been happening in my home due increased contact with it and another spirit (see below) i was taking care of for several days. Hopefully this will make the doll ensoulment process easier, more successful, and worthy of a similar write up as my spirit box for the Mighty Dead. Ongoing house redecoration for the meantime means it is not possible to construct the level of permanent altar i want to yet, so this work is ideal for the inbetween time before that work can be begun in earnest.

To this end, recently an opportunity presented itself to work with a doll made out of clay and fabric, as well as do several crossroad workings. The doll in question caught my eye when browsing one of my favourite artists sites (links at bottom of post to her amazing work), and it seemed to exude a certain amount of intensity in its construction. Due to this coinciding with the other halves birthday, i decided to acquire the doll, and activate it to the best of my ability, raising it’s own awareness in ritual. The expected payment of this process by its spirit, its assigned mission to look over and guard the person she was being gifted to. This was far less intense a working than anticipated, as upon receiving the doll, it felt far more active than I had ever have anticipated. It had also already been named, receiving the name of Persephone by her maker.

DSC_0055

The doll prior to the empowerment ritual

The actual process was quite simple, with the same sigil work, and invocationary elements as used for my own workings with my own familiar and Hecate, Lucifer and Belial. Their sigils were empowered in the usual manner, and the doll seated upon a crossroads sigil similarly empowered. This was followed by a period of intense focused visualisation and communion with her, with a contract being drawn up in blood. That intensity prevailed through the entire ritual with her, with a marked degree of seriousness and willingness to work with me. I thought that it would have been a relatively sedate affair, but it proved otherwise, and it definitely felt like at points the developing spirit directed affairs at hand.

This was followed up after the gifting  of the doll at the crossroads after it was accepted, and the care of her passed over out of my hands. The promise written and sealed was thus committed to the Gods in Fire and the main libations preserved from the night alongside fresh offerings given in love.

The process has allowed me to gain some valuable experience. These objects, when produced by hand, seem to contain an innate level of awareness much higher than expected, alongside a certain ‘level’ of intensity that is difficult to describe until worked with. After empowerment, whilst the object was still in my home, it was noticed that an increased level of interesting activity was occurring including the movement of solid objects when the house was empty. Whilst it could have been done by either familiar, this activity seems different from the physical activity my own familiar has been using to on very rare occasions get my own attention. So it is interesting to note as a possibility.

Furthermore, this has made me interested to see how this compares with the doll body being procured for my familiar,  as it could affect the method I have in mind.

Although short and sweet, I hope this has been an interesting read. I’d like to give a shout out to the doll maker, who can be found at https://www.facebook.com/MajesticThorns and https://www.etsy.com/shop/MajesticThorns respectively.

Readers who have also ready my small entry on Datura, posted sometime last year, might recognise the artists style!

Midsummer Blessings: From the Garden of Hecate

Posted in Divination, Paganism, The Path of Flames with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 23, 2014 by Sypheara

Thought I would just call in and wish everyone a happy belated midsummer. Everything has been crazy busy, with the article almost ready to be submitted for review  to the editor. To ensure that the article is rounded off to a decent standard, i’m trying to clear myself of a writers block that is preventing the last 200 words from erupting forth. Once that is done, it will need checking before it is fired across.

I am hopeful it will selected, as I feel that I have managed to touch on a important aspect within how pagan paths approach masculinity and how our views can be limited by self imposed archetypal systems which sometimes are a poor model for describing complex systems. Feedback from people who have seen the draft version has been very positive. With the fire of the sun burning within and within, the visible shadow of the black sun, fulfilling the promise of a renewed year promised by Beltane, I feel as I too have to now step up to the mark and deliver. I hope I will be able to channel that into my writing to bring something that is worthy of them into fruition within a written, published media soon.

MidsummerNightBonfire2

Midsummer fire by Petritap

In other news, I went to a ritual designed to celebrate the Goddess Hecate and God Hermes, run by a fantastic friend of mine. For anyone who follows my blog or knows about my path, the syncretic elements at play here are obvious, so it felt impossible to miss out on. It was expertly carried out, with the invocations to both great spirits being made, the chant of the seven vowels of A-E-H-I-O-Υ-Ω utilised to build up power before finally visualization was undertaken in an attempt to take each practitioner to the Garden of Hecate herself.

Pan was encountered, leading the participant to the lake of nymphs where they were purified in the Lake of Forgetfulness. Once completed, the road winded through the blazing heat of the garden to the feet of Hecate herself, who took on a three figured statue of white marble, holding two torches which resembled the sun and the moon. These glowed with an unearthly intensity, and it was here Hecate allowed the participant to anoint their feet in her box of dye, making ruddy the feet and giving her blessings of a second chance and the beginning of a new path.

hecatestatueTriple Hecate Statue – Unknown Source

From here, Pan then directed the participant onwards with Hecates blessing up a long, winding marble staircase and into an ancient greek temple, surrounded by columns, standing fire lamps, buzzing insects and a rectangular fountain. Here Hermes was encountered, who directed the seeker to look deep into the mercurial waters which swirled in the basin that were at the same time clear, full of light, but also swirling with shadow. There, his blessing were given, and his direction to me made clear.

Returned to the circle and mundanity by the God, a final piece of advice was given by fate from a scrying bowl, and offerings laid out to thank them for the communion.

It was a special and powerful rite, and indicated good signs for the journey to Spain hopefully later this year and my magickal path in general. I hope Midsummer also brought you equally as good omens for the future!

Beltane: Blessings and More Work Ahead

Posted in Folk Belief, Paganism, The Path of Flames, Wicca with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on May 4, 2014 by Sypheara

Hello everyone, thought I would post a belated Beltane to you all. I hope that you all enjoyed the Sabbat night to its fullest. It is a reminder that summer has become in earnest, and that we all have things to get on with whilst we have the opportunity and the energy. I have been up to a variety of things recently, which I thought I would share for interests sake.

I got to participate in more group workings, which I have begun to enjoy as a small addition to my own practice. My role was to keep pace and build the energy for ritual with a goatskin drum, and it was a privilege to be able to help out in such a manner in celebration of Hecate and Lucifer in their more subtle guises as the God and Goddess in a Wiccan ritual. I find it refreshing that at Beltane that pagans of differing belief systems can gather and worship in a unified manner, putting aside petty arguments for more important matters: communion with our Gods.

I purchased a simple, and not expensive mask for this ritual, which I thought would help really embody the face of spiritual fire radiated forth in the current season. Whilst a simple masquerade mask, I was actually quite happy with it.

DSC_0043

Interesting mask, a pity about the decor..

A rather large piece of news is that I have also been invited on request to submit an essay for a work entitled Finding the Masculine in the Goddess Anthology.

From the editors own description, ‘This anthology will explore men and their relationship with the Goddess and the overarching Pagan community. We’re looking for essays and articles that detail personal experiences with the Goddess, How as men we come to know the Goddess, and ways you have worked through challenges and obstacles being a man within the Pagan movement.’ If anyone who may be reading this believes they could also contribute, he can be contacted at his site at http://www.erickdupree.com.

For my own contribution I hope to concentrate on producing a personal essay on how Lucifer as consort to Hecate led me onto my spiritual path, and assisted me in getting to know Hecate as a distinct all powerful entity. I hope to produce an essay which conveys my experience of how all encompassing the Witch Gods really are, transcending gender, race, and even species and how I embraced them full heartedly.

Hopefully it will be accepted, and it will be where the majority of my energy and time is going to be directed for now. It would be interesting indeed to be able to add my own thoughts and views into a properly published piece of work.

Thanks again for reading,

Small Update: Doll Creation Go-Ahead

Posted in Occultism, Other, The Path of Flames with tags , , , , , , on April 24, 2014 by Sypheara

I recently posted about my intention to create a body for my familiar utilising a correctly constructed ball jointed doll, and that I would need to first discuss the concept with my familiar.

The initial step in this was completed a few weeks ago, upon my birthday. The familiar has given all indications directly to me that it is fine with the concept, and wishes for me to proceed.

As such, at some point in the future, I will be detailing this process in greater detail after all. I still have some of the specifics to iron out, especially to do with the styling of the doll and what  is most desired by my familiar, but it has indicated that the doll is interestingly, be represented in as asexual manner  as possible.

In_your_weakest_hour_by_Vissepopje

In Your Weakest Hour by Vissepopje

The process is still also to be worked out, alongside any additional requests from the spirit. On top of this there is the material need to acquire all the necessary elements. The body itself is going to be relatively expensive, with the size of the doll body im aiming for will be along the lines of 1/3 ‘human’ size. As for timescales, I hope to have the doll created sometime through the next few months, with work and sorting out my new home taken into account.

Alot of researching to do on my end, for multiple reasons, but I’m looking forward to getting started on this in privacy and recording the process. I am hoping that Hecate and the spirits will give me a hand with it, but im expecting it to be a rather personal and introspective process.

Anyone who may have any words of advice, especially if they have attempted anything similar with their own familiar or collect ball jointed dolls, feel free to post below or email me. I’d be thankful for any assistance sent my way!

The Pitfalls of Syncretism

Posted in Necromancy, Occultism, Paganism, Wicca with tags , , , , , , , , on April 20, 2014 by Sypheara

It was some months ago now, almost a year, when I first began writing posts for the blog. One of my first posts was on Syncretism, the practice of incorporating elements from different, sometimes vastly different culturally beliefs, into your own. I went into describing how I believe this can be highly beneficial, but it must be done in a considered way, to avoid insensitive cultural appropriation and combining elements that do not, fundamentally, belong together.

I was recently doing some reading on several blogs I and a few readers here frequent, when I came across a post by a writer on Mixed Family altars. This intrigued me, so I thought I would give it a read through. Needless to say, what I read gave me some cause to concern due to in my eyes, its inaccuracy and bad advice.

What follows is therefore my own take on it. I have copied the original text below – I felt like reblogging it, or otherwise identifying the original poster would have made it more of a clash of personalities / conflict rather than about any discussion over content. I have no desire to spoil someones day, but merely highlight something I feel is important.

+++++++Original Post+++++++

Mixed Family Altars

Not all pagan keep permanent altars in their homes, and sometimes its because not everyone follows the same path. You can, however, provide a mixed family altar where everyone can combine their beliefs in one place.

You will need;

Mutual respect. Even if someone is Christian, you should respect that path and if they wish to set up a cross or similar religious symbol. Sharing respect strengthens family bonds, and helps encourage one another in their spiritual path.

Candles. If you worry about fire, you can also use the flameless candles. Its for the mood, to symbolize enlightening and energy.

Offering plate (or bowl, basket or other container). Here is where family can put prayers, promises, offerings, and other items in a single space for the Divine. I would suggest including a small pad of paper with pencil so members can jot down words when the need arises.

Offerings can often take many forms such as food, drink, incense, prayers, promises, shiny things, and intentions. You could even put money, and then the family can vote on where to send and which charity.

Season and holiday symbols. For instance, a spring altar might include eggs, flowers, but also crosses, and symbols of Christ’s resurrection.  A winter solstice them can include symbols of the god, but also a nativity scene.

The family altars becomes a special place where members can individually or as a group, gather together for prayer and spiritual expression.’

++++++++++++++

pillar_johfra_bosschart

‘Pillar’ by Johfra Bosschart

There are numerous problems with the above approach, which I believe presents incorrect information. Firstly, it presumes that every belief within the household can be combined, despite the different cultural, theological, and philosophical teachings that may run through the different currents presented upon such an altar.

For example, lets consider that in one household, one partner is a follower/dedicated to Hecate, and another is a Catholic Christian. A combined altar, as above would combine statues of the Goddess, alongside images of of Christ on the cross. We can ask a simple question, and say that, if we look at the teachings of both, would this be a logical altar to work with?

With some thought, the obvious answer one would arrive to would be no. Hecate, as Supreme Goddess, would not want to share her altar (her altar it being, as it is dedicated to her in some manner) with an icon of the solar cults which have seen her own and her followers suppressed for the past two thousand years and longer. On the opposite, why would the solar eternal God of the Bible, which specifically forbids witchcraft and worshiping idols, want any kind of altar, specifically where one would be placing such an idol on it specifically breaking his own teachings?

Even if we follow the mantra that all Godforms are just that, forms that are veils over the actual, real spirits and gods, then it follows that we would choose veils which can be combined, can merge, can empower the altar and through it, our connection through the harmonious symbolism to the actual spiritual forms of the Gods and Spirits themselves. Creating a confused, non workable amalgamation works for neither party, and does not have any real power behind it.

Even within seemingly harmonious combinations, trouble can arise. I discussed this with a friend, asking  him for his advice to clarify whether it was possible to practice and to some extent combine the practices of the teachings of a particular cult of Death alongside that of the Primal Craft. He was in agreement with my hunch that it could, but even so there was room for error. He has since discussed how others, coming to the same conclusion, tried to combine these beliefs and create a shared altar for both Saint Death alongside Hecate, and that those people received an astral backlash for attempting to combine not the work, but the dedication together in one amalgamation.

When we realise that the Gods are not there solely for us, solely to supply human needs and wants and neither created up  by our own minds and fantasies alone, it becomes easier to see how these issues could be serious and could cause very real problematic situations. The Gods and Spirits must be respected, each one worked appropriately with as little assumptions made about them as possible.

To return to the post, mutual respect within shared households for other peoples spiritual paths, unless they are overly extreme, dangerous or invasive, is vital to maintaining good and open relationships between people. There is no reason why, in the above example, a space could not be set aside in the house and two smaller, separate altars constructed. If the Christian wanted to work with Hecate or leave offerings to her, he could at her altar, and vice versa, without creating the conflicting space. This would allow both people to partake and interact with the others path, to some extent, and learn about how it is important to the others persons life and would still allow the same, shared practice sought after in the initial idea.

In addition, this would, in my eyes, garner more respect than the combined altar method. Approaching someone else spirit or ruling god, outside of your own comfort zone, shows respect to them and their beliefs rather than insisting upon your space necessarily encroaching upon theirs. It also enables both people to walk their own paths as well, utilising the altars for the personal dedications to their ruling gods and spirits without the confusing influence being enforced upon them by a shared altar projecting a mixed current.

candle-04

Candle, photographer unknown

A lesser problem in the post is also the mention of the candles. Here we see a demonstration of the modern belief that a symbol can replace an actual object in worth. This is not correct, and is not fair advice without clarifying what is lost by this replacement. Actual candles are made of a variety of substances, all of them organic in some manner. When burned, these act as an actual, energetic offering outside of just being simply to set a mood for a human participant. This is a thoroughly necromantic practice – the energy of the animal product is being released as consumable energy, as a real, powerful flame that radiates a strong heat.

Conversely, electric candles are at best, a very poor substitute, the energy being used for them being generated by some chemical reaction (zinc and manganese dioxide reacting with each other in the case of alkaline batteries). These do not have the same effect as actual candles burning a wax that has been produced from or by an animal. For safety they are, of course, preferred, but this comes at a large cost in their worth as an offering, and I would not recommend them unless they were the only choice due to some kind of regulation. If housed in proper holders, the chance of fire is exceedingly small, with a bit of care.

This assumption is typical of some neopagan practices, which do not respect folk belief and instead concentrate on intention alone. Intention is a very powerful tool, but when combined with actual, physical objects that contain magical properties, the results of any operation will be heightened exponentially. It is also to be said that some operations are impossible without being grounded with corresponding physical materials as without them the correct gates / avenues for the spiritual power to egress will not be opened.

Many people that work with the plant spirits for example, would be able to tell you that much if not all of their current relies on personal experience with not just the plants spirit, but also its physical form.

With the above said, it comes back to the point that we must realise our magickal practices and beliefs should not be an escape into a solipsistic fantasy. Instead, they should be grounded in real contact, utilising whatever methods work for the practitioner.

I’d be interested to see what other people think on this subject, so feel free to fire up the comments section.

Cheers for reading,

Belated: Happy Imbolc

Posted in Folk Belief, Luciferianism, Other, Paganism, The Path of Flames with tags , , , , , , , , on February 2, 2014 by Sypheara

To everyone reading this, firstly I’d like to wish you happy Imbolc! Sorry the post is  a bit late, but I got caught up in my own workings.

Imbolc marks the beginning of spring, when the solar fires once again begin to return and winters grip begins to loosen.  It certainly hasn’t felt that way in England as of yet! A mild but constantly rainy weather pattern seen this be a very strange January, and  I can only hope that going forward it will calm down allowing for more workings outside to be performed. Although it can’t be said to be unwelcome, keeping everywhere around here relatively warm.

The cross quarter sabbats, are for me, emphasised more than the solstices. The liminality, the crossing points, are for me the times were I seem to combine solitary work with celebrating the event with the wider pagan community. This is something, as a solitary practitioner, I seldom do but feel is essential to prevent myself from falling into a disconnected state.

I often get asked if there is a reason behind this, in an objective fashion, but it simply more of a personal preference that for me. The answer I often give is simple.  The solstices and equinoxes become more of a personal experience for me, simply due to practicality. Not as a rule but as a guide, using the cross quarter days for communal and introspective work, and the quarter days for more workings with an objective, it allows for multiple expressions of my practice where  the staggering of priorities encourages me to take part in all of the Sabbats on some level. Not out of only a sense of duty, but missing out! Of course this isn’t roughly stuck to – if I feel prodded in a certain direction, I roll with it and do workings or rituals or whatever as required.

I participated in an interesting ritual the night before Imbolc which revolved around the Goddess Brighid and the Spirit of the Swan. This involved a guided meditation of a journey to a lake, where upon the Swan would be met, and a message potentially received.

For me it was rather interesting, and played out far differently that I could have expected. I entered a forest from the minds eye that was filled with silver light. The trees and the land itself seem infused with silver, and I felt of reduced weight. It wasn’t long before I reached a lake – the lake was a deep, sapphire blue, in vivid contrast to that of the surrounding land. On it, a swan swam, xrayed, it’s skeleton viewable through its skin. It flickered between this and a more solid corporeal appearance, as it swam towards me.

When it got close, I felt it an aura extend from it to myself. Quite quickly this enveloped me,  surrounding me in a deep sapphire light. At this point, I entirely lost any sense of being connected within anyone else present. I felt the bones push out from my skin and reach down into the ground, piercing into the roots of a great tree. My minds eye was dominated by a giant, white and blue searing eye, and a voice spoke through the swan delivering its message. The energy felt not too dissimilar from that of Belial’s, and completely overtook my body. Eventually once the message was delivered, the experience slowly became less intense, before finally my bones retracted back towards my body, and the swan began to swim away. Even as it did so, it felt like the scene and my own aura was collapsing inwards, and soon i was surrounded by a pitch blackness.

800px-Imbolc_Festival_February_3rd_2007

Imbolc celebration in Marsden

In the distance, I could see an orange light so I stumbled towards it. As i got closer, I could see a skeletal figure, which looked like a ram or goat, except it possessed human hands and stood upright on it’s hindquarters. Like the swan, it flickered between this skeletal visage and a solid form. In this case, the solid form was of a creature covered in black deep fur,  with bone bleached antlers. I could see it stirring a dark, black cauldron, in which a clear, warm liquid that had the consistency of treacle circled, vortex like. As I came closer, the figure reached up, and tore off its own head, to reveal an angelic male figure underneath. This figure glowed like white hot metal, and long flowing blonde hair descended around the narrow face like streams of plasma .There was a feeling that the air around him (for the figure felt distinctly male) was electrified. The skin of the goat fell away entirely , and the figure walked over to me and extended out his right hand, and placed it on my head. There was no feeling of heat, but instead I felt an immense jolt of energy, and suddenly became aware of my own physicality. At that point, I slowly came to, and opened my eyes..

All in all it was a very rewarding and interesting journey, although far different and expanded than  what I expected or the goal of the working itself. It was interesting that I experienced no feelings from Hecate or any other feminine energies.

After everything was over, the person who was leading the ritual also gave to me and other participants a wonderful present: a hand sewn Imbolc bracelet, made out of a white material that also  bore a small charm. As someone who works with knots, knows how much concentration to create it would have taken and appreciates how much intense focus can create a powerful object, it was a very, very nice gift. It was taken home and placed on the altar immediately, and I intend to wear it close to the body between now and Beltane.

On the Sabbat night I prepared the offerings, tying them with red and white string. This included several apples, an alcoholic libation, and some walnuts. One of these walnuts was opened, and filled with the ashes from burnt incense and a small piece of coloured quartz, one I have had since being a small child. As such, i felt it would make an ideal gift. Associations were not thought of here in any large amount – just the desire to return something to the spirits for their continued presence and as  a thank you for the previous experience.

On Monday, I plan to take these offerings to an appropriate place, somewhere secluded where they are unlikely to be bothered. I hope you have all had a similarly interesting few days.

Syncreticism: When is it useful, when is it hurtful?

So I’ve been mulling over the next topic to bring up.. and this important one popped into my mind. As someone who worked primarily as an eclectic in some sense until relatively recently, it was always something that I continually took to be a subject of high importance as I approached my workings.

Syncreticism is best and most quickly described as the ‘Reconciliation or fusion of differing systems of belief, … , especially when success is partial or the result is heterogeneous.’. This  means in the terms of Paganism and Occultism the combining of different spiritual beliefs, and often actual practices, of  various traditions at the same time into a new form.

Commonly, these traditions are originally discrete practices or currents,  unconnected in any manner, separated often geologically, culturally and temporally, but slowly became incorporated into each other over time. An example of these types of hybrid beliefs which can grow from the merging of two forms of belief are possibly best found in the New World. Here, a myriad of  religions exist which arose from the combination of multiple belief systems. An easy case to point to would be something like Santería, which is the result of a  mixture of Yoruba, Native American and Catholic belief systems.

In modern Pagan and Occult circles, it can be often seen that there are high degrees of syncreticism, no doubt as the result of the easy access  to information caused by the coming of age of the internet. Whilst some of this works, and works well, other examples (which I won’t point out as causing offence isn’t the sake of the blog..) clearly does not, and in my opinion causes more harm than good.

So where do we draw the line? Whats helpful, and whats hurtful? Unfortunately, drawing that line is  on a very case by case basis.

A low level syncretic approach I would argue is vital. The search for analogues of your own practices and beliefs in other, differing currents allows for an insight that would otherwise be lost. Looking at other currents allows for each practitioner to potentially see where it intersects with his or her own teachings, which in turn allows for the revelation of new ideas and relations which may have, in a broad sense, have an enriching effect on their own beliefs and practices.

In this way, the philosophical insights from those other currents can be incorporated into ones own and potentially allow for its expansion and growth by challenging, confirming, or placing a different light on ones own beliefs.

As soon as we begin leaving this territory however, things become much murkier and difficult to assess. When it come
s down to taking different rituals and mythological/theological ideas from different currents and combining them into a new form that utilise this ‘home brew’ , I would argue there is a very large possibility of utter disaster if it is not thought through with the most utmost care.

Even very ‘similar’ currents on the exoteric level can be significantly different on the esoteric level, causing  substantial problems in the long run. In the best case where two mostly incompatible currents come together, one element becomes dominated by the other, and becomes passive, having little effect in enriching the original tradition.  In the worst case however, the new combination just serves to show extreme disrespect to the currents being ‘forced’ together, and will either be entirely ineffectual or even harmful to the practitioner/practitioners who utilise it. The last is most likely to come from attempting to combine two very disparate belief systems.

An example of this to make the point clear is that, as someone who works with Hecate I would never use the name of Kali or Inanna for example within my tradition. Although connections between them exist, and one could even make a convincing argument that they are faces of potentially the same force, it would be wrong to use them within a ritual context as each face comes also with its own individual signature which marks it as its OWN current. This signature is influenced by the culture, and time period, it was originally conceived within and will undoubtedly come with additional influences which do not allow for them to be combined within the same working or potentially even the same framework.

The exception, I would say, is if the practitioner of a current was told otherwise through direct spirit work, with his or her Gods  or equivalent. Such instruction, if from a genuine source, should not be resisted as multiple, new, powerful ideas, concepts and paths have arisen from this process.

In conclusion, I do believe that overall Syncreticism is a highly important part in what makes Modern Paganism and Occultism feel alive and dynamic. It has definitively enriched my own practice, which will be seen throughout my further blog posts. However it is something that must be approached very carefully, with proper thought given to the above considerations without haste, recklessness, and disrespect to the traditions involved.

A Warm Welcome

Well here it is, the blog I thought I’d never make. I don’t usually enjoy talking about myself or my practice, due to the baggage that it inevitably brings, but after much encouragement I finally decided it was time to bite the bullet. I hope many of you will enjoy what I have to share!

Firstly, I have completed a basic about page which can be found in the navigation box on the right. For those of you who don’t personally know me, I hope it will suffice as an introduction as to what this blog is about and my own personal experience up to this point on my path. It was alot to try and fit into a reasonable word count, as I believe it’s important for people to know my general background to find what I write more approachable. I don’t like pretentiousness or the focus on the individual over ideas which can be the case within the Pagan/Occult community in some places, so I hope it comes across as frank and honest as possible.

Many of you may be wondering why I have chosen the name The Luciferian Revolution for the blog. After all, isn’t this a blog on Pagan things and clearly Lucifer is a christian construct and idea?

A valid question I would say. The long answer would be too long to explain in the introductory post, but the short answer is a definite no.

Lucifer was the name refering to an earlier Roman/Greek concept based around the gods Phosphorus and Hesperus, themselves personifications of the morning and evening appearances of the planet Venus. Phosphorus was simply the name for this planet, which translates to the morning star or dawn star. This is turn, like many other Pagan concepts, became demonised by the Christian Faith via association with the concept of Satan, due to Satan himself being described as the ‘morning star, son of the dawn’. Satan, a concept and story itself influenced by syncreticism with earlier Canaanite and Babylonian ideas of gods/goddesses descending from heaven to journey to the underworld, thus became forever attached with the name Lucifer.

As this clearly illustrates,  the concept of Lucifer is clearly one that belongs to the Pagan sphere. In addition, as we will see, the Christian influence infact only  served to reveal more aspects to an entity which exists far outside and separate of it, with many faces of its inherent nature being revealed across many belief systems in different forms.

For explaining the name of the blog, it’s easier to simply explain that for my path, Lucifer is in every sense of the word, the light-bearer, the ever living fire, and counterpart to the coolness of the void. To us, Lucifer is the highest point of the cosmic tree, the supreme torch bearer of divine wisdom and the ruler of the ever burning fires of Thaumiel.  He can be seen as our “Prometheus”, who was born from the womb of the Dragon to bring to man the spiritual fire which animates and empowers us.

It is believed in my Path that the world has entered a new age, or aeon, in which the Gods themselves will initiate the return of  true spirituality to mankind. This is a spirituality that will do away with the nihilistic skepticism, and dogmatic, controlling religions of the current age which together, in their own ways, only serve to disconnect individuals from their own spiritual path and the Gods.

This knowledge, coupled with the works being produced currently alongside the resurgence of interest in the areas of  paganism and the occult  shows the signs of a coming true Luciferian revolution and the freedom it will bring along with it.

With this in mind, I thought the name of the blog was more than fitting.
