Small Update: Doll Creation Go-Ahead

Posted in Occultism, Other, The Path of Flames with tags , , , , , , on April 24, 2014 by Sypheara

I recently posted about my intention to create a body for my familiar utilising a correctly constructed ball jointed doll, and that I would need to first discuss the concept with my familiar.

The initial step in this was completed a few weeks ago, upon my birthday. The familiar has given all indications directly to me that it is fine with the concept, and wishes for me to proceed.

As such, at some point in the future, I will be detailing this process in greater detail after all. I still have some of the specifics to iron out, especially to do with the styling of the doll and what  is most desired by my familiar, but it has indicated that the doll is interestingly, be represented in as asexual manner  as possible.

In Your Weakest Hour by Vissepopje

The process is still also to be worked out, alongside any additional requests from the spirit. On top of this there is the material need to acquire all the necessary elements. The body itself is going to be relatively expensive, with the size of the doll body im aiming for will be along the lines of 1/3 ‘human’ size. As for timescales, I hope to have the doll created sometime through the next few months, with work and sorting out my new home taken into account.

Alot of researching to do on my end, for multiple reasons, but I’m looking forward to getting started on this in privacy and recording the process. I am hoping that Hecate and the spirits will give me a hand with it, but im expecting it to be a rather personal and introspective process.

Anyone who may have any words of advice, especially if they have attempted anything similar with their own familiar or collect ball jointed dolls, feel free to post below or email me. I’d be thankful for any assistance sent my way!

The Pitfalls of Syncretism

Posted in Necromancy, Occultism, Paganism, Wicca with tags , , , , , , , , on April 20, 2014 by Sypheara

It was some months ago now, almost a year, when I first began writing posts for the blog. One of my first posts was on Syncretism, the practice of incorporating elements from different, sometimes vastly different culturally beliefs, into your own. I went into describing how I believe this can be highly beneficial, but it must be done in a considered way, to avoid insensitive cultural appropriation and combining elements that do not, fundamentally, belong together.

I was recently doing some reading on several blogs I and a few readers here frequent, when I came across a post by a writer on Mixed Family altars. This intrigued me, so I thought I would give it a read through. Needless to say, what I read gave me some cause to concern due to in my eyes, its inaccuracy and bad advice.

What follows is therefore my own take on it. I have copied the original text below – I felt like reblogging it, or otherwise identifying the original poster would have made it more of a clash of personalities / conflict rather than about any discussion over content. I have no desire to spoil someones day, but merely highlight something I feel is important.

+++++++Original Post+++++++

Mixed Family Altars

Not all pagan keep permanent altars in their homes, and sometimes its because not everyone follows the same path. You can, however, provide a mixed family altar where everyone can combine their beliefs in one place.

You will need;

Mutual respect. Even if someone is Christian, you should respect that path and if they wish to set up a cross or similar religious symbol. Sharing respect strengthens family bonds, and helps encourage one another in their spiritual path.

Candles. If you worry about fire, you can also use the flameless candles. Its for the mood, to symbolize enlightening and energy.

Offering plate (or bowl, basket or other container). Here is where family can put prayers, promises, offerings, and other items in a single space for the Divine. I would suggest including a small pad of paper with pencil so members can jot down words when the need arises.

Offerings can often take many forms such as food, drink, incense, prayers, promises, shiny things, and intentions. You could even put money, and then the family can vote on where to send and which charity.

Season and holiday symbols. For instance, a spring altar might include eggs, flowers, but also crosses, and symbols of Christ’s resurrection.  A winter solstice them can include symbols of the god, but also a nativity scene.

The family altars becomes a special place where members can individually or as a group, gather together for prayer and spiritual expression.’

There are numerous problems with the above approach, which I believe presents incorrect information. Firstly, it presumes that every belief within the household can be combined, despite the different cultural, theological, and philosophical teachings that may run through the different currents presented upon such an altar.

For example, lets consider that in one household, one partner is a follower/dedicated to Hecate, and another is a Catholic Christian. A combined altar, as above would combine statues of the Goddess, alongside images of of Christ on the cross. We can ask a simple question, and say that, if we look at the teachings of both, would this be a logical altar to work with?

With some thought, the obvious answer one would arrive to would be no. Hecate, as Supreme Goddess, would not want to share her altar (her altar it being, as it is dedicated to her in some manner) with an icon of the solar cults which have seen her own and her followers suppressed for the past two thousand years and longer. On the opposite, why would the solar eternal God of the Bible, which specifically forbids witchcraft and worshiping idols, want any kind of altar, specifically where one would be placing such an idol on it specifically breaking his own teachings?

Even if we follow the mantra that all Godforms are just that, forms that are veils over the actual, real spirits and gods, then it follows that we would choose veils which can be combined, can merge, can empower the altar and through it, our connection through the harmonious symbolism to the actual spiritual forms of the Gods and Spirits themselves. Creating a confused, non workable amalgamation works for neither party, and does not have any real power behind it.

Even within seemingly harmonious combinations, trouble can arise. I discussed this with a friend, asking  him for his advice to clarify whether it was possible to practice and to some extent combine the practices of the teachings of a particular cult of Death alongside that of the Primal Craft. He was in agreement with my hunch that it could, but even so there was room for error. He has since discussed how others, coming to the same conclusion, tried to combine these beliefs and create a shared altar for both Saint Death alongside Hecate, and that those people received an astral backlash for attempting to combine not the work, but the dedication together in one amalgamation.

When we realise that the Gods are not there solely for us, solely to supply human needs and wants and neither created up  by our own minds and fantasies alone, it becomes easier to see how these issues could be serious and could cause very real problematic situations. The Gods and Spirits must be respected, each one worked appropriately with as little assumptions made about them as possible.

To return to the post, mutual respect within shared households for other peoples spiritual paths, unless they are overly extreme, dangerous or invasive, is vital to maintaining good and open relationships between people. There is no reason why, in the above example, a space could not be set aside in the house and two smaller, separate altars constructed. If the Christian wanted to work with Hecate or leave offerings to her, he could at her altar, and vice versa, without creating the conflicting space. This would allow both people to partake and interact with the others path, to some extent, and learn about how it is important to the others persons life and would still allow the same, shared practice sought after in the initial idea.

In addition, this would, in my eyes, garner more respect than the combined altar method. Approaching someone else spirit or ruling god, outside of your own comfort zone, shows respect to them and their beliefs rather than insisting upon your space necessarily encroaching upon theirs. It also enables both people to walk their own paths as well, utilising the altars for the personal dedications to their ruling gods and spirits without the confusing influence being enforced upon them by a shared altar projecting a mixed current.

candle-04

Candle, photographer unknown

A lesser problem in the post is also the mention of the candles. Here we see a demonstration of the modern belief that a symbol can replace an actual object in worth. This is not correct, and is not fair advice without clarifying what is lost by this replacement. Actual candles are made of a variety of substances, all of them organic in some manner. When burned, these act as an actual, energetic offering outside of just being simply to set a mood for a human participant. This is a thoroughly necromantic practice – the energy of the animal product is being released as consumable energy, as a real, powerful flame that radiates a strong heat.

Conversely, electric candles are at best, a very poor substitute, the energy being used for them being generated by some chemical reaction (zinc and manganese dioxide reacting with each other in the case of alkaline batteries). These do not have the same effect as actual candles burning a wax that has been produced from or by an animal. For safety they are, of course, preferred, but this comes at a large cost in their worth as an offering, and I would not recommend them unless they were the only choice due to some kind of regulation. If housed in proper holders, the chance of fire is exceedingly small, with a bit of care.

This assumption is typical of some neopagan practices, which do not respect folk belief and instead concentrate on intention alone. Intention is a very powerful tool, but when combined with actual, physical objects that contain magical properties, the results of any operation will be heightened exponentially. It is also to be said that some operations are impossible without being grounded with corresponding physical materials as without them the correct gates / avenues for the spiritual power to egress will not be opened.

Many people that work with the plant spirits for example, would be able to tell you that much if not all of their current relies on personal experience with not just the plants spirit, but also its physical form.

With the above said, it comes back to the point that we must realise our magickal practices and beliefs should not be an escape into a solipsistic fantasy. Instead, they should be grounded in real contact, utilising whatever methods work for the practitioner.

I’d be interested to see what other people think on this subject, so feel free to fire up the comments section.

Cheers for reading,

Update on Looking Forward: Tool Creation and Other Matters

Posted in Occultism, Other with tags , , , , , , , , , on March 21, 2014 by Sypheara

Updates have unfortunately been sparse to the blog lately, but that has  not meant things have been moving along quite nicely on the personal front. Whilst this is not directly relevant to the  content of this blog, I thought it was all worth a mention because, hopefully, this change in my circumstances will facilitate an increased level of practice in the future.

I have recently  acquired a job which has enabled me to have the funds  to finally get a place of my own. This will hopefully provide both the space and privacy to to do necessary workings with the appropriate tools, and I am looking forward to having my ‘walking rate’ on the path accelerated at a rapid pace.

As such, I would like to touch on some coming potential subjects that the blog and myself will cover over the coming weeks and months.

Tool Creation and Acquisition

Over the coming few months and weeks, I hope to be building up a set of tools for use in a ritual context. This includes a myriad of things, and therefore could be on a variety of topics.

For example, I will be creating an altar, which will require significant work. This altar i hope to follow a fairly complicated process under the watchful eye of Hecate to ensure it is properly enlinked to the current. This will include numerous esoteric workings, as well as physical modification of the table i use itself, perhaps even entering the wood etching and pyrography departments. Which for me would be highly interesting and challenging, as it would be my first attempt to incorporate such things into my own work.

As an additional, I will be making a wands for my own personal use, and helping a friend acquire wood in a correct manner for their own. This tool will be one of invaluable help, and since this involves working with the spirits of plants and trees, I want to ensure that taking the wood for its construction is done in as proper a manner as is possible.

The above are limited examples, as I have more planned and hope to detail what I can (ie where its appropriate) as I go forward. Hopefully, this will help me work with Hecate and the other Gods on a much closer level without undue interruption.

Familiar Work

A year or two back, I did some workings with my primary familiar, aimed at establishing a greater connection to it. These for the most part, only met with limited success, and unfortunately, due to other issues arising, I was unable to continue those set of workings.I now feel again it is time to concentrate on this aspect as I move into a space where I feel more comfortable doing larger workings.

Whilst I have, and am capable of talking with this spirit rather infrequently through vision and dream, a closer, a more bonded and intimate connection is sought than is currently present. To this end I will be creating a body for it which is not only a tool but a gift to reward is positive presence and influence in my work and life up to this point and to ask for its continued assistance.

This body will probably be an enspirited doll. This doll, like the spirit box was and is for the mighty dead, will act as a focus point that offers a physical housing which will help it to manifest in the physical world.  The dolls body will probably be based on an existing ball jointed doll, which will be loaded with specific elements and undergo a series of workings that will encourage the spirit to accept it as a potential body.

Over the coming weeks, I hope to ask my familiar for its permission  to continue this work, and if given, whats its preferences are to body gender, type etc are to ensure maximum compatibility.

Five Elements and their Synchronicity

I have been meaning to write a small entry about the importance of numbers, and the interesting parallels between the modern concepts of fundamental physical forces and that of the classical elements. Whilst this may have been touched on before, I haven’t seen anything on it recently and thought it might be good to put forward my own perspective on it as I find it quite interesting.

For now however, it still remains for the relocation to be seen through to the end, and for existing work to be written up in physical format and other correspondences to be completed.

Thanks for reading as always, and a very happy Ostara everyone!

Of Interest: A Recent Case of ‘Demonic’ Possession

Posted in Necromancy, Occultism with tags , , , , , , , , on February 5, 2014 by Sypheara

Browsing the internet recently, I came across a very interesting article published by the BBC.  This article relates to a case of supposed demonic possession in Indianapolis, America. This case I think is of high interest for numerous reasons. One, the case, when viewed against the backdrop of other similar cases involving Demonic Possession and Poltergeists, shows remarkable similarities. Two, the case was not just the eyewitness reports of one or more questionable witnesses, but rather activity of a paranormal nature was witnessed by medical professionals working on the case. One instance for sure was blatant, and without natural explanation, if the report is to be believed.

The original BBC news link:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/25943051

A more comprehensive link to an article by the Indystar:

http://www.indystar.com/story/news/2014/01/25/the-disposession-of-latoya-ammons/4892553/

And in case of a host failure:

Bishops report requesting permission to exorcise the family

https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/1005721-report-to-bishop.html

hammondpolicedepartment_figure

The sheer amount of eyewitness testimony means that this is definitely one of the most impressive cases in recent years I’ve stumbled across. It must be noted that this must be hell to go through as a family, quite literally. It is a shame that in many of these cases, it is always assumed by medical professionals to simply be a delusion existing solely in the minds of those undergoing the experience. This only causes a further downward emotive spiral as they become further ostracised, increasingly not only being persecuted by the spirits at home, but further by the support structure supposedly in place to protect them.

In cases like this, it is obvious that the state of fear and panic causes the feedback loop these spirits want. As the terror takes hold and natural explanations are deemed rightly insufficient, the outbreak of sudden religious mania is visible in many of these cases, usually creating a worse situation. From many case studies, intervention of the church usually aggravates matters, and very often causes more problems. Usually the incidences only subside after a specific action has been taken. Some of these actions can be seen to be general when many cases are looked at, but others have a distinct specific action which causes such disturbances to end.

Whilst I will leave my thoughts on this matter for another time, it suffices to say  I find such cases compelling because they match my own belief about the Dark Dead, and similar spirits, which can if strong enough, cause such problems.

Hope you enjoy having a good read through.

Ritual Write-Up: Spirit Box Creation

Posted in Luciferianism, Necromancy, Occultism, Paganism, The Path of Flames, Traditional Witchcraft with tags , , , , , , , , on January 17, 2014 by Sypheara

After a long and hard write-up, the Spirit Box Creation PDF is finally complete, and now available in the resources section! Although seemingly taking forever, I can honestly say that I am very pleased with the results. Writing in-depth with others in mind, deciding what is appropriate and not to include, in such a document is a far call from writing up it my own journal!

What spurred me to write the document is the powerful amount of information gained through it’s construction by the spirits contacted through it. Made to help give me a more concrete, physical link to the mighty dead, the spirit box which resulted from this process has gone on to be an invaluable tool, and has pride of place on my personal altar whenever possible. As such, for those who feel comfortable, want to attempt it, and feel ready to do so, I can say I have learned and gained a lot from it, and it is worth an attempt if you feel drawn to it.

Clocking in at around 20 odd A4 pages, it must be said that this is definitely NOT the lightest of documents I have ever produced. However,  it contains pretty much every aspect of the ritual I used to empowering my spirit box. Details on method and ingredients are all listed, along with relevant sigils, and the file also contains images. These I took at relevant and appropriate times during the ritual before the box was ensouled and the invocations began.

Without further ado, the quick link is below:

Spirit Box Creation

Lastly, I would like to thank those who have read over my work and have given their feedback to it. It is much appreciated that people would be interested and give their time to look over it for me. I’d also especially like to thank Mark Alan Smith, who has gracefully given permission for several of the sigils revealed and channeled through his work with Hecate and subsequently published in the Queen of Hell to be used in this document.

Thank you for reading as always,

Ritual Write-Up: The Trident

Posted in Occultism, Paganism, The Path of Flames with tags , , , , , on December 8, 2013 by Sypheara

Continuing on with the theme of the day, I have finished the blog reshuffle I have been intending to do for some time now. The resources page has become the links page, and has been replaced with an resources page of my own work. This will hopefully allow me to distribute some of my own work in PDF format, which will make it easier to read, easier for people to get hold of a hard copy, and reduce the amount of articles needing to be split into multiple posts.

The first of the uploaded files relates to a working which I took part in earlier this year, which was run by the Temple of the Ascending Flame. With the material aligning with my own work, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to give back some time and energy in participating in group work. This is not something I usually do, but it turned out to be a highly rewarding experience. The supplied and uploaded file has only been slightly modified – outside of that, it is identical to the one I sent after the workings were completed.

068-Seal-of-Belial-q100-500x500

Seal of Belial

The working itself deals with contacting Hecate, Lucifer, and Belial, over the course of several nights utilising sigils, blood magick, and meditation and visualisation techniques. The results were very interesting, and really helped move my personal practice forward on a theoretically, practically, and spiritual level.  At the time, it was the longest ritual I had performed and the first to utilise blood magick, where beforehand only the breath had been primarily utilised.

It is quite a long and serious bit of work. Many of the sigils I have still not been able to figure out the use or meaning to, but plan to when possible do a series of workings to investigate the main seals revealed. The quick link to the PDF is below.

On Reflection: Witchnames

Posted in Occultism, Paganism, The Path of Flames, Traditional Witchcraft with tags , , , , , , , on November 24, 2013 by Sypheara

The idea or concept of a Witchname has never been an appealing to me. However, recent events have forced me to re-evaluate my take on it, and I thought it would make for an interesting, small post. A quick and to the point explanation for those who have not come across the concept:  A witchname is a name taken or given by a witch to describe their magickal self identity.

You can come across such a concept in in multiple places, and I was introduced myself to it through reading different source materials.  It is often approached in several, widely differing ways across traditions, which vastly alters the meaning and reasons behind having having one. Again, to keep it short, I will describe both extremes of the spectrum, although it is to be reminded that most traditions and schools fall somewhere in between these two examples.

At the most extreme, a witchname is said to be the literal, true magickal name of the practioner.  To know somethings true name, is said to have complete control over it, and examples of this type of approach can be found in several older  demonological  texts and other even older sources which predate industrial society. This is said to be a self awakening experience, said to give control over your own self in a much greater, more concious way, and be a secret to hold exceptionally guarded. A witchname is in this sense supposed to  be given or otherwise discovered, and is not self given as its a property belonging to said practitioner beyond their control.

AstarothSigil

The Sigil of Astaroth. Sigils can also be seen as a form of true name in symbolic form.

At the most open, and at the opposite extreme, is where the witchname is self given, and acts as a simple pseudonym. This pseudonym is adopted often for many various reasons, usually to separate or abstract the persons magickal identity or activities away from their regular everyday self. This is said to elevate the magickal side of a person, whilst helping them separate from the mundane when carrying out workings so that they can be more effective. Often, this name is used for all activities, is not kept secret, and is often used in a public space. This can be seen in many online communities, where users often use their witchname, in this sense, as also their viewable username.

Although knowing of it, I have never been one for the concept of the witchname. Although holding some sympathy with the first concept, and believing it is technically possible, I have always regarded witchnames with suspicion. This has come from meeting other practitioners who are very vocal about their witchnames. Many of these people have left me with the impression that such a name was only adopted to fuel the ego – not due to some internal discovery, spirit or god given gift, or for practical application.  Also, from a personal standpoint, I feel no need to outside of ritual to dramatise my belief, believing that this can often do great harm to the path by making it seem frivolous or pure self indulgence.

As such, the whole concept was although not forgotten, certainly not dwelt upon. After finishing my second journal, I was at a loss at how to start the other despite having plenty to actually write up. How would i begin? Locked in this thought pattern for several weeks, I finally had a break through of a sorts. On the night of the Frosty Moon, I was wide awake for the majority of the night time, unable to sleep in any way. Thus annoyed, I continued to try and sleep with little success, until I eventually passed out for a duration of perhaps 40 minutes sometime very late on in the morning as the sun was almost risen.

themightydead

I immediately found myself in a powerful dream, in which I was sucked through and into the spirit box I had constructed for Samhain. I followed this dark tunnel for awhile and found myself standing in a clearing amidst a dark wood, with a pale, sickly blue sky.  In the centre, I could see a figure tied to a stone table that was inclined at a 45 degree angle. Looking closer, I could see that this figure was infact myself, or a form of myself that I often use whilst travelling. Briefly described this form is faun like with notable differences. It possesses horns similar to a gazelles, and large wings that are feathered, but bat like.  Its skin is ivory white, contrasting against the black shadowlike fur and black veins and markings. This was the first time me seeing this body from an outside perspective, and I could see the serpent like eyes vacant –  open, with the colours shifting within them dulled. I moved towards the shell and began to step into it, merging my form with it. Once this weird, but not unfamiliar process was mostly complete, I could see from my new eyes. Removing the bounds of the form that kept it tied to the table, I tried to move off.

Immediately, I could feel a cool rush of wind and black forms rose up from the base of the pedestal, with a hissing. These forms assumed the forms of shadow like figures, in the main appearing as vaguely female in shape. They surrounded me, touching me across the flesh, being at the same time warm and ice cold, leaving temporary marks across the flesh. Repeatedly, they whispered a name repeatedly into my ear. The word was clear and distinct, penetrating my being as it was spoken. This got louder, and more intense, with several of the forms passing in and through my own body. I was overcome with a feeling that they were calling to me, with a name that refered to me that I had never encountered. This persisted for what seemed like at least ten to fifteen minutes, before they grew quiet, their forms dissolved, and they sank back into the ground.

shadowwoman

Shadow Person, artist unknown

With this, I attempted to stand from my stone support but felt incredibly drained, and fell to the ground. The impact startled me into actually waking back into normal awareness with a large jump.  Analysing this experiment in context, much of my previous assumptions, perhaps unfair ones in light of this event, have been removed.

Having my own experience of what I believe to be the Mighty Dead speak to me what is effectively a kind of witchname has made me look upon the concept with renewed interest and as an avenue for future exploration. The inspiration from this experience cleared my ‘writers’ block, and I plan to make use of the revealed name in future magickal work starting with the beginning of my new journal.

Sounds from the Abyss: Unearthing Forgotten Horrors

Posted in Occultism, Other with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 20, 2013 by Sypheara

I recently had the pleasure of attending Unearthing Forgotten Horrors, a night of awesome ambiental drone / noise and classic cult british horror films. I was invited by one of the bands playing, and being a fan I felt compelled to check it out.

I am glad I did. The staff, organisers, and bands really did pull out the stops and make it an enjoyable night for all, and showcased some really interesting material. I am a fan of Sun o))) and similar bands, so finding out that  local artists not only exist but play live gigs has been awesome.

Whilst I could go into reviewing the event, I’ll save the long post as this is not really the blog to do it on. The reason I mention the event is that from a purely Occult perspective, some of the bands are doing some very interesting things, similar to Cultus Sabbati to those who are familiar with that project. A notable and memorable example from just one band to illustrate is that they buried several of their electronic components used to generate the tracks, such as capacitors, in areas known to have been used as plague pits prior to use in playing/performing their tracks.

The visuals on show were also highly interesting. Some of these were more abstract than others, the powerful psychedelic imagery of Joseph Curwen and Culvers performances coming to mind from memory. I also particularly enjoyed the spoken poetry like tunes of English Heretic exploring a thematic line which revolved around witch cult leader Robert Cochrane’s suicide, coma and eventual death from Belladonna poisoning.

Suitably inspired, I created my own small tribute to the event, using a mix that was given to those who attended featuring the attendant bands. To promote them, and the weird but powerful way in which they generate their compelling sounds, I thought I would try my hand at creating my own visualisation, and contribute in my own, small way to the interesting dynamic expression on display.

I hope you enjoy!

Modus Operandi: Graveyard Workings

Posted in Necromancy, Occultism with tags , , , , , , on November 4, 2013 by Sypheara

This morning, I put the final touches to a working involving the offerings to the Gods of the Arte and Mighty Dead in relation to Samhain. In addition, I can also say with some degree of confidence that the spirit box is completed, and will now hopefully serve its purpose as a housing for them in the future, even outside of the dark seasons of the year.

I intend to write as fully as I can on that process, sharing what I am able, including many pictures from the work itself. However, since I am back at work tomorrow after Samhain break, I unfortunately won’t be able to post that installment until this coming weekend at the earliest.

However, whilst within the graveyard this morning giving the final offerings to the dead and sealing the work, I realised it might be good to share how I operate within the graveyards. What follows is based on my own methods combined with methods I have adopted/learnt from outside sources. Hopefully this will illustrate the importance of having some rules when interacting with the dead. As such, this can be considered a small ‘primer’ for the ritual outlined that will follow in another post,

Background

My attraction to graveyards as places stems from further back than any obvious spiritual connections I can think of, and definitely before I became in any way involved in Paganism or Witchcraft.  It was when I was around 17 when they became attractive places to me, and I often enjoyed visiting them.  I found them hauntingly beautiful, and it was probably these feelings in my period of maximum morbidity that would later nudge me in the direction of spirit work after I had experienced my healing dream. Many of these visits were with a friend of mine, someone I valued higher than any other person at the time, including members of my own family. These activities seemed mostly harmless, and for the most part they were.

However I would later have an horrendous experience visiting a graveyard with said friend. When analysed retrospectively I realise I had made a massive mistake. Without going into all the long and lengthy details, suffice to say that the dead in graveyards, the dark dead, do not enjoy their environment being played in and messed with. On said occasion, after interfering with a particular gravestone, and eating lunch above said grave, there was a very dark change that came over me and my companion. We argued over seemingly small inconsequential things, odd being people that never argued with each other at all.

After the visit, I felt increasingly hopeless, without reason considering the worst had been put behind me at this time, and i was in a more secure position only recently having had my healing dream. The other person reported feeling the same, unnaturally depressed, energyless, and drained after the visit. Although these effects seemingly wore off, the relationship worsened quickly, and soon disintegrated. Other negative things happened, with me seemingly having constant bad luck. It was only several months later after working with Lucifer on that years Halloween that this trend finally seemed to be broken, and my mood and luck finally changed for the better.

The reason I am relating this? These kind of effects are typical of interference by the Dark Dead, a name referring to the earth bound spirits that have overall negative qualities, and can cause adverse affects on the living. These types of spirits congregate around areas where death is common, graveyards being one of them.
Whilst it would be too much risk of confirmation bias to confirm that indeed this was the case several years after my experience subsided, it has taught me to be much more cautious, respectful, and take seriously places where any kind of spirit dwells, never mind those that can have such negative effects.

Modus Operandi

As such, as soon as I began to work in the graveyard doing necromantic work, I made sure to begin employing several techniques to minimise the risk to myself whilst carrying out said work. I relate these below, with a quick explanation as to why I personally carry them out, I recommend that these are employed whenever working in graveyards, and that the more contact with the Dark Dead specifically sort, additional steps are added to ensure that they are not brought back from where they should remain. These are to be read with the knowledge this is my personal method of working – it likely needed to be adapted depending on how you interact with these spirits or do workings in general.

Ask for permission to enter

Before entering the graveyard, I always either ask for permission to enter from one of the guardians (usually Hecates aspects relating to the dead, or Señor de la Muerte) . This is usually done before leaving the house, and can be performed in many ways. It can be intuitive, with the question simply being asked and internal thoughts scrutinised for any sign, be in a vision or feeling.

In addition or instead of this,  a more concrete method can be employed such as asking a candle, and requesting it to be extinguished before it burns down completely if the working is to be prevented from going ahead. If once asked, indications are that it can go ahead, protection and empowerment is asked for and the working goes ahead.

The alternative is to ask the question before the entrance gate to the cemetery, which although offering usually more clear indication and better results, also is more visible and only suitable when privacy is easily obtainable, such as when the location is seldom visited.

If once asked, indications are that it can go ahead, protection and empowerment is asked for and the working goes ahead. If indications are bad, the working does NOT go ahead, regardless of anything else, and alternative methods and or locations are sought.. The important part is the question is asked in a way that you personally can relate to the power in question, and can get a reliable answer.

Enter on the left foot

When crossing the cemetery threshold, doing so on the left foot, whilst proclaiming thanks for permission to work within the graveyard, is an affirmation of your intent showing you accept the opportunity offered to you. The left side of the body in general is often seen as otherwordly and magickal in the occult, and the left side and path is closely connected to some of the Death Gods and spirits in my work. It is therefore much more than a symbolic act, but a reinforcement between my own actions and their higher, commanding natures, allowing me to be empowered through sympathetic action, which is important in magick.

Don’t steal from the spirits

Do not take anything from the graveyard that could potentially belong to the spirits. To do so would give them a physical link between yourself and them, especially if it is taken back to ones home. The Dark Dead are jealous and possessive, and will take offence to this, and is something I have personally experienced that as related, potentially caused me considerable grief. Even spirits not related to the Dark Dead can require payment, and can themselves become angered in a similar manner. Anything that has been left overnight in such a place becomes ‘claimed’ by them, or otherwise linked to their energies, and cannot be retrieved without being paid for. This includes any personal items you may have forgotten, or otherwise lost accidentally in such a place and have returned to retrieve the next day.

Retrieving items / materials from the Graveyard

Any item that is to be retrieved from a Graveyard must be bought and paid for, and only retrieved as a matter of necessity. The method of buying such items from Graveyards varies significantly depending on what it is you are buying. There are numerous methods of buying graveyard dirt and other items from the graveyard, depending on the spirit being interacted with. Often these revolve around a specific grave, and making a petition to the spirit to give up X item in exchange for gifts, typically coins (See below), distilled beverages, red wines, coffee and tobacco. Burning incense or leaving an equivalent gift is also sometimes practiced. Since graveyard dirt and other items can indeed be needed for certain operations, there will be times when working necromancy items are needed to be acquired from a graveyard in this fashion. Whats important is mostly that some sort of agreement is made with the spirits to retrieve said ingredients, and that they arn’t simply ‘lifted’ and pilfered. I will hopefully be able to post my own variant of this up in the future when it becomes necessary and I have the time.

Leave Three Coins for the Dead

On leaving the graveyard it is customary for me to through threes coins of the same value, usually ‘copper’ rather than ‘silver’ coins, over my left shoulder upon exiting. This is a step learnt from working with the necrosophic currents related to Qayin, and has folk connections that have been researched. The reasons for this seem to differ on who you ask, but I personally believe it is to pay the guardian spirit for its protection and as an offering on leaving for its work and to ensure it restricts any of the Dark Dead from following once you have left the cemetery. As such, I see it as a vital step and always prepare the payment before entering, so  I will not be stuck upon leaving.

Do Not Look Back

This particular rule comes from greek belief, where it is believed that to see spirits following behind a person was to indicate that they too would soon join the ranks of the dead. As such, when a ritual is completed, and exit is become from the cemetary, I never look back, the work having been completed. Once done, it is important that one makes a concentrated attempt to return to the land of the living, and not be distracted or otherwise caught by the influence of the Dark Dead whilst attempting to leave.

Parting Observations

It is always good to remember the practical limitations when working in and around cemeteries. Most people won’t take kindly to you working in them, so it pays to find a location where such encounters can be minimised.  In more built up and populous areas, choosing larger, more spacious cemeteries often helps as I have found that the larger the cemetery, the less likely people are to wonder in / through or otherwise go there especially at night. Whether this a purely psychological thing, or also down to the work of the spirits, I’ll leave up to the reader to decide.  Otherwise finding an out of the way, country location is most likely the most ideal solution, if not always the most realistic.

As usual, hope you have enjoyed this smaller entry. Hopefully it will prove useful, especially when seen in the light of the Samhain spirit box ritual write up to come. In additional, unrelated news,  I will soon be setting up an email address for the blog, in case anyone has any questions they wish to ask they are not comfortable with using the commenting system for. Thanks for reading as always, and I hope everyone enjoyed Samhain as much as I did!

Small update: Happy Samhain!

Posted in Divination, Necromancy, Occultism, Other, Paganism with tags , , , on October 31, 2013 by Sypheara

Hello all, a small update as promised following on from the review and the last tarot reading post. Alot has happened, for the better, thats caused me to be a very, very busy individual lately. Before I launch into it all though, I’d first like to wish you all a Happy Samhain, and hope you enjoy whatever it is you have planned. If you have nothing planned, whether recreational or work wise, then I say you are going to miss out! Its a fantastic time of year, and an important one at that.

Tarot / Personal Update

It seems that my previous reading turned out to be much more spot on than I expected. After a hard slog, and not so little faith, I have finally managed to land a job, fulfilling what I believe was the Judgement card in my favour. I have been watching out for any pitfalls, especially in my own behaviour. Controlling problematic aspects of my behaviour and demonstrating alot of patience has finally paid off, and I am now much more financially secure and free.

As such, I have moved out of my old home to stay with friends, a temporary stop gap to acquiring my own place. This is going to affect the rate of updates, but its something I have needed to do for a long while, especially with the eventual goal being complete privacy for my practice going forward into the future. This would allow me to do much deeper, powerful rituals without affecting others, and enable me to really have the space to pursue many ideas im currently still unable to.

I am keeping in mind the earlier warnings in the reading, and hopefully it will continue to work out, Hecate willing.

Observations and Projects

With a bit more freedom and more understanding people around, moving back to the city has been a really good experience. Despite more people being around and it being an environment that can in no way be described as being ‘near to nature’, it will provide a much more ideal ground for me to move forward with many areas of my life. It’s closer to friends, a more active pagan community, and is generally a nicer place to live than where i was previously based.

If you look hard enough, you also occasionally find gems hidden amongst the rough..

I haven’t positively identified this planet yet, but seeing such an interesting specimen in the heart of the city, with such impressive flowers, has sparked my interest and brought a smile to my day. Hopefully its a perennial plant, and I’ll be able to take a sample or two in the future for curiosities sake to see if the small hunch ive got is correct. Need more hands on after all, and less book learning.

However, that will have to wait. Tonight I plan to make my gift to the mighty dead and the Gods, in the form of a spirit box. Hopefully this will make a good offering, and im looking forward indeed to crafting it / presenting it at the graveyard tomorrow or the day after, depending on how the process goes. I’ll be detailing this as best as I am able, depending on what feedback I get from the spirits tonight. A picture of the box i’ll be using, along with the central quartz crystal, is pictured below.

Blog Roadmap

With all the above , the planned content for the blog has shifted. Ill still be delivering the sigil and ritual working write ups as promised, for general perusal, but it is more paramount to concentrate on my own Samhain working to ensure its correctly carried out. Once that is over with, Ill be for the short term concentrating on updating my own personal journals, which have gone neglected for too long despite the amount of ideas/sigils that are swirling around in my head since the witch mark was acquired.

Hopefully once this is done, the ritual writeup will be of interest and use to some of you out there, I do plan on posting more pictures where possible.

Have a good one,

~S~
